Thirty-two people, were charge-sheeted in the case of an illegal casino running in a posh neighbourhood of South Kolkata in the early morning hours today. The police arrested all of them from Imperial Club on Camac Street and seized INR 6.5 lakh in cash and tokens worth INR 55 lakh.
According to leading daily DNA, this is the biggest raid in Kolkata in recent times. All of them were scheduled to be produced before the court today.
Vishal Garg, Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Crime) said, “Acting on a credible source information in the intervening night of 13-14/10 /16, raid was conducted at Imperial Club at Camac Street Pantaloons building wherein gambling racket was running behind Poker game. In course of raid, 32 persons were arrested including partners of the club, players, card dealers and manager from there for running gambling racket under disguise of Poker. Cash Rs 6.5 lakhs, numerous chips amounting to about 55 lakhs of print from Rs 1000 to Rs 200, incriminating transaction documents were seized from there. A specific case registered at Shakespeare Sarani PS against them and all will be produced at Bankshall Court today.”
Unfortunately it is set ups like these which are giving a bad name to poker even in states where it is legally allowed. Hopefully the poker scene in Kolkata will not be too affected by these events. Gutshot will keep you posted on this news as more develops.
