9 persons busted at Ankleshwar, Gujarat for gambling


There have been multiple crackdowns on gambling rings across the country even during this nationwide lockdown. Surat has reported 209 fresh coronavirus cases on Monday which brings the total number of cases to 11,399 in the city. Even though cases of the deadly coronavirus have been increasing, the local police busted a gambling den and arrested nine persons at an industrial unit in Ankleshwar.

On Monday night, officials of Bharuch Local Crime Branch raided a gambling den which was operating from a rented room of an industrial unit situated in Ankleshwar, Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC). The officials also stated that the raid conducted was based on a specific lead. Akshar Industries is located in Ankleshwar GIDC, the police raided and detained nine people on site including the tenant who is living in the room inside the premise of the industry. The accused were arrested for gambling with cards and the police seized INR 50,000 in cash along with 9 mobile phones, a car and 3 motorcycles; the total amount of money seized, summed up to INR 3.63 Lakhs.

Kanti Venkar, the tenant at the premises of Akshar Industries, was also running a gambling den. The accused is employed as a security guard at the site and was paying INR 2,500 monthly rent to the owners, according to the police. Sub Inspector of Bharuch local Crime Branch, Y G Gadhvi stated that they received a tip in regards to the gambling den that was being operated by the security guard at night after the unit of Akshar Industries closed for the day on Monday.

Gadhvi also added, “Primary probe suggests that there is no direct involvement of the owners of the industrial unit. We handed over the accused to the Ankleshwar GIDC police and a case has been registered under the gambling Act and under the Disaster Management Act for violating social distancing norms”

Illegal gambling activities have been occurring a lot lately as this pandemic is getting the better of some. While people have been locked in their homes out of fear this lockdown, the police have been vigilant in keeping the virus at bay by discovering gambling rings across the country.
