When thinking of casinos, it’s easy to picture slot machines immediately, as they have become one of the main attractions overtime. Luring so many to try their luck at winning some cash or even better – hitting the jackpot. Famous all over the world, slot machines have become something of a cultural phenomenon all on their own. In the gambling world these money-loaded machines are where many try their luck for the very first time. But even when playing them, you would’ve heard these machines being called by various names you didn’t even know!

So, here is a little bit of slot machine lingo from around the world to get you started, and maybe next time when someone refers to them by another name than the classic ‘slot machine’, you’re not completely lost.

 

POKIES

If you’ve been to casinos in Australia or New Zealand, you must have heard this term being used around a lot. Around the 1900s, when casinos were still in their early stages in Australia, slot machines used to be called poker machines. It slowly became easier to call them ‘pokies’ when slot machines started becoming increasingly popular, and so the name stuck.

FRUIT MACHINE

The term ‘fruit machine’ is a British slang for slot machines, mainly referring to the bright images of fruits in the slots. These slots awarded prizes in the form of sweets or chewing gums. Pictures of fruits were used in the machines to avoid restrictions as slot machines were technically banned. However, the symbols of fruits have become iconic and have now become the industry standard features till today.

PUGGIE

‘Puggie’ or ‘puggys’ is a Scottish English slang used for slot machines. It is usually associated with a variety of gambling related meanings. One reason why this term is used could be the association between slots being holes to insert money and cash dispensers being also called puggie.

Slot machines are a classic casino favourite wherever you may go, so there’s no harm in knowing some of the different names people call them.
