Facebook to add dedicated ‘Gaming’ icon on navigation bar

The lucrative worldwide gaming market is only seeing growth and Facebook, the tech giant based in US, has announced that it will introduce a dedicated ‘Gaming’ icon on its main navigation bar of its app, according to the tech news website TechCrunch. The icon looks like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle and users, after clicking on it, will be taken to the ‘Facebook Gaming’ portal.

Facebook said that more than 700 million of its user-base play games or watch gaming content on its platform. Facebook has selected these users for testing this new feature, and after successful assessment, the company plans to roll out the feature to everyone.

In 2018, Facebook made enormous efforts to increase its presence in the gaming industry by introducing a slew of gaming specific features for its users like the ‘Gaming Creator’ program, which provides more opportunities for game broadcasters, live stream tipping, which enabled watchers to tip streamers and a bunch of other features.

A recent report on the worldwide Esports industry states that global Esports revenue is projected to top $1.07 billion this year, which is good news for Facebook to maximize its profits using its already well-scaled and popular platform.

Competitors of Facebook like YouTube and Twitch have already focussed their platform towards gamers. YouTube, with the launch of YouTube Gaming app back in 2015 was hoping to do the same thing Facebook is doing now, but the app didn’t get much traction and YouTube’s parent company Google decided to shut it down last year. Snapchat, another social media giant, plans to introduce a gaming-specific platform for their app.

It makes sense for Facebook to bring out new features targeted towards the gaming audience, since the industry is certainly on the verge of a breakthrough moment worldwide. Every report that looks at the Esports industry says the same thing. There’s a lot of opportunities for companies to grow and Facebook is one of them trying to strengthen its presence in the gaming market.
