Fourteen Detained For Gambling In Kolhapur; INR 12.95L Seized

India is still under the coronavirus lockdown. The sudden lockdown had led to several people losing jobs, stuck in places and being restricted movements, people were finding it difficult to cope up with the immediate change. And during the pandemic, people were forced to make ends meet by hook or crook. A few could have resorted to gambling in order to make easy money.

In the past few months, there have been gambling raids across the country and hundred have been arrested so far. In a raid that was conducted yesterday at Kolhapur, Maharashtra, 14 people were detained for gambling. Based on a tip-off, the Local Crime Branch (LCB) raided the residence of Tanaji Vishnu Awale in Ichalkaranji town.

The fourteen people were detained red-handed and INR 12.95 lakhs were seized from them. The police also seized playing cards, mobile phones, two wheelers and a car. Local Inspector Tanaji Sawant said that the case is still under review under the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act has been filed against all the accused. 

Several such cases have been taking place in Maharashtra and other Indian states. Whom can we blame?

The government took drastic steps when the lockdown was put in place. This led to an uproar from migrants and all the others that were daily wage labourers. Thousands of people were stuck in metropolitan cities as the lockdown was put into effect immediately. A majority of the population is not aware that money can be earned in multiple other ways also. Though the option of Work from Home was available, it was restricted towards only one sector. 

To avoid gambling, Indian states opt to arrest the ones that are involved in it. The other option of reducing them can be by bringing about changes in the existing laws.
