Tightening the noose around illegal gamblers in the country, the police have been patrolling and raiding illegal gambling activities since the lockdown.
The Mohali police on Wednesday night arrested seven gamblers with INR 1,00,300. The accused have been identified as Rajesh Paswan, Irfan, Sikattar, Rakesh Kumar, Vijay Kumar, Dinesh Kumar and Rajesh. Inspector Manphul Singh, station house officer, Phase 1 police station, said, “The suspects were gambling on the terrace of a showroom in Phase 1 market on Wednesday night. Following a tip-off, our teams conducted a raid and nabbed them on the spot.” A case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the Gambling Act.
A few days before in a town known as Zirakpur, the local police arrested four persons red-handed and seized a total of INR 20,200 from the suspects from two places within the city. The suspects Identified resided in different places all over the city. The action taken by the police was based on a tip off. Two specific teams were formed, and raids were conducted at two different places in Zirakpur. During the raids, the suspects were found offering money if the chosen number by the customer gets selected for the prize. The police have registered a case against all suspects under relevant sections of the Gambling Act.
The Mohali district witnessed another big single day jump of 22 coronavirus cases on Friday taking the total number to 361 cases with 256 persons discharged from the hospital while there were 98 active cases with 7 deaths reported in the district. With a rise in illegal gambling activities in the country, the police have taken a strict approach in dealing with the suspects to ensure the norms and regulations of the lockdown set by the government are earnestly.
