Alastair Cook gifted 33 beer bottles after 33rd hundred
Currently, India and England are battling it out in the 5th Test match of the series, where India have already lost 3-1 and will most likely slump to a 4-1 loss later today. However, this game was never about India or England, but was all about England opener and former captain, Alastair Cook.
The legendary English batsman announced his retirement from the game before this match, aged just 33 years, and he needed 140-odd runs in his final test to finish 5th on the all-time test run-scorers list, by overtaking Kumar Sangakkara. It looked highly unlikely as both teams have struggled to score runs in this series and Cook himself had a batting average of just 18 in this series.
However, his fifty in the 1st innings gave him a better chance, and he bettered that performance, going on to score a century in the 2nd innings. He finished how he began, also having scored a century on his test debut against India many years ago. He was eventually dismissed for 147(286) in his final innings, walking off to a tremendous applause from the players and the fans in the stadium.
England then declared for 423/8, setting India a huge target of 464 to win. The end was inevitable for India, who later came out and lost 3 wickets in no time, including Pujara and Kohli getting out for ducks. They recovered from 2/3 to 58/3 at the end of Day 4, but it's only a matter of time before India lost on Day 5.
England's most successful test cricketer signed off with 12,472 runs and 33 test centuries at the age of 33. The English media decided to present him with the unique gift of 33 beer bottles at the press conference at the end of Day 4. "On behalf of all the media, we appreciate everything you have done as a player and captain for England over the years, particularly the way you dealt with us," said one of the journalists present.
