Chi Jen Chu leads APT Taiwan Championships Event Day 2
The Asian Poker Tour (APT) began its 2019 APT Taiwan series on 20th February and the Main Event is already in the books. This is the first time APT has stepped foot in the country. The previous stop in Japan was also a first. This year seems like APT has decided to venture into new territories, which is great for the game.
Coming to APT Taiwan, the Championships Event is underway and already saw first two starting flights in the books. A total of 128 players (61 from 1A and 67 from 1B) were in contention on Day 2 and the field eventually whittled down to 45 runners. Leading those was Taiwan’s own Chi Jen Chu with 806,000 chips.
The TWD 49.5k buy-in was coughed up by the field to create a massive prize pool of TWD 12,571,200 (~INR 2.89 Crores), 2.5 times the guarantee. Total turnout for the event was 288, which also eclipsed previous APT Championships Event turnout of record 248 entries.
Coming to the chip leader, Chu has over $50k in live cashes playing mostly in his home country. He won his biggest cash of $17,884 this January for winning 2019 Poker Master Taiwan High Roller. The Main Event of this series even saw him finish 12th. He is a good regional player and if he goes on to ship this, he’ll see a major amount being added to his bankroll.
Trailing behind Chu is Philippines’ Marc Rivera with 738k chips. He came 2nd in High Rollers 1 and is looking to make a mark here too. Rounding up top 3 is again a Taiwanese Jack Nai Yuan Hu with 696k chips. Hu already has a title under his name in this series and is looking strong to land this one.
Some of the pros in contention are UK’s Alex Lindop (513k chips), Alan Lau King Lun (668k chips), Phachara Wongwichit (456k chips), Sparrow Cheung (270k chips), among others. Day 1A’s chip leader Ben Lai is through Day 2 with 438k chips. Japanese pro Tomoharu Furuya is with 519k chips. Mark Reyes didn’t last long in the day and got eliminated. Joining him to the rail were SJ Kim, Lim Yohwan, Michael Kim Falcon and others.
