Dhaval Mudgal progresses from Day 1A of WPT500 Aria

The prestigious World Series of Poker (WSOP) kicked off its 50th edition almost a month ago and at the start of the series, we mentioned about how a record Indian field will be in attendance. To help them, we created a guide of some of the high value tournaments they could play in Las Vegas apart from the WSOP itself.

One of them was the Zynga Poker WPT500 Las Vegas, which returned to the Aria Hotel and Casino for the 6th consecutive year. Of course, there were several Indians in participation among the 205 entries that registered on Day 1A, the first of four starting flights in the tournament.

Only 5% of the field progresses which means at the end of day's play, 11 survivors bagged their chips to return on Day 2, which will be played on Wednesday. Among these was our very own Dhaval Mudgal who progressed as one of the top stacks of the night, with 408,000 in chips. He is 5th in chips while the overnight leader is Sung Joo Hyun, who bagged 690,000 chips.

Mudgal has been enjoying good scores overseas in recent times, ever since he banked a career best $104k for winning the WPT Vietnam Main Event in October last year. Mudgal has a few cashes in Las Vegas in the last month including a WSOP cash in Event #34, a cash in the 2019 Grand Poker Series and one in the DeepStack Championship Poker Series.

He will return on Day 2 looking to better his previous best score at Vietnam. The pay-outs began during the day itself with the top 26 players receiving a minimum of $900 each. Another Indian Gokul Parvathaneni cashed in 12th place, becoming the final person to bust on the day and taking away $1,200 in prize money. Incidentally, he was eliminated by Mudgal itself.

Day 1A chip counts:

  1. Sung Joo Hyun - 690,000
  2. Christopher Usude - 651,000
  3. David Wood - 645,000
  4. Mark Adkins - 641,000
  5. Dhaval Mudgal - 408,000
  6. Jeff Kim - 246,000
  7. Christopher Korotky - 239,000
  8. James Hundt - 211,000
  9. Helen Martynov - 169,000
  10. Marius Meier - 152,000
