'equity_hunter' wins IOPC The Elite on Spartan
Every poker player in the country is excited as The Spartan Poker launched the seventh overall edition of India's largest online poker tournament series called the India Online Poker Championship, where a whopping advertised guarantee of INR 7+ crore ($1+ million) is up for grabs over the course of 10 days between 13-22 July 2018.
Apart from side events, each day sees one or more featured tournament that allows the best players to take home the big bucks and vital points to the IOPC Leaderboard. That big event of yesterday was 'The Elite' tournament where a buy-in of INR 11,000 could lead to winning a big share in the INR 25 lakh GTD prize pool.
However, a brilliant participation of 350 entries was noticed in IOPC Event #4 The Elite INR 25 Lac GTD (6 Max, 11000 RE), which was the guarantee being crushed and the prize pool being taken up to INR 35 lakh. This allowed the top 31 players to get paid out a minimum cash prize of INR 30,800.
The biggest share of this prize pool was eventually won by 'equity_hunter', who took home a massive pay-check of INR 7,40,250 along with important points towards the IOPC Leaderboard. This is what he was awarded for outlasting the rest of the field and grinding for over 8 hours to take down the title.
He beat Abhishek Kumar aka 'uncle_scrooge' in heads-up, with his two pairs (Aces and Nines) being too superior to Kumar's Ace high card. However, Kumar also walked away with an impressive prize of INR 4,98,400 for second place and he is one to watch out for in this series, currently on a hot run having also won the Sunday SuperStack on The Spartan Poker less than a week back. Both these players gained vital points to the IOPC Day 1 Leaderboard.
Gutshot caught up with the winner of this tournament. He was happy to share his experience while wishing to stay anonymous. He said, “IOPC needs no introduction. The biggest online tournament series in India by far. The guarantees are huge, and it never disappoints you. It was the opening day and Elite was the day's featured event, so it was amazing to be able to ship it. As always, the field was tough, but I managed to stay focus the whole time.”
“There was one big hand in particular which I remember was very much the defining moment where we had to come from behind for the chip lead with 4/5 remaining. We got in 10s vs JJs pre and the flop came 10-10-9. This was a stroke of luck which was much needed at that critical time,” he said, narrating a key moment in the tournament.
“With so many opportunities on the horizon and amazing guarantees, I'm looking forward to fine tune my skills-set and get better at the game we love. I feel highly motivated and excited about my future prospects in poker. After some of our compatriots had a sick run this time at the WSOP, it feels it is good time for poker in India in general,” he said about his game and the future of poker in India.
