Guru Kumar emerges as champion of WPT India 20K Kickoff
The Indian poker industry seems to be booming currently with all the major Indian brands having a poker room in Goa, while the global leader World Poker Tour (WPT) returned to India for its third series which began a couple of days back. The series began with the 20k Kickoff Event and yesterday, we played down till a winner was announced.
It was the popular face of Vikram 'Lungi' Kumar who began Day 2 of the tournament with a massive chip stack, nearly double the next best as he led the final 11 players. In fact, he was doing well yesterday too, even entering the final three as the chip leader. However, he was unfortunate to lose that chip lead and then bust in third place for INR 3+ Lakh in prize money.
He shoved from the button with Qd Th and got a call from Ayush Garg who showed pocket Threes. Garg went on to complete a set as the board rolled out Ac Td Js 3s 7h. Heads-up then began between Garg and Guru Kumar, with the latter holding 1.5 million chips as compared to Garg's 1.11 million.
There would've been many people hoping Garg could get across the finish line as winner because he recently finished second in the IPC Main Event last month too, losing to Raj Talwar. However, it wasn't his day as he lost in heads-up once again, finishing second from the original field of 161 entries.
Here, the prize pool of INR 30+ Lakh was distributed among the top 21 players and Guru Kumar was the biggest beneficiary of the night, taking away the top prize of INR 8.05 Lakh. In the final hand, Garg moved all-in for 475k chips with Kh 8d and Guru Kumar called with Ah 9c. The board opened 3s Qh 9d 5h Js and a pair of Nines was enough for Kumar to win the pot and his maiden WPT title. As for Garg, he had to settle for INR 5,27,500 for finishing as the runner-up.
Final Table Results:
- Guru Kumar - INR 8,05,000
- Ayush Garg - INR 5,27,500
- Vikram Kumar - INR 3,10,800
- Vaibhav Sharma - INR 1,89,200
- Himanshu Arora - INR 1,46,000
- Asheesh Naag - INR 1,21,000
- Nirav Parekh - INR 1,04,876
- Anand Babu - INR 92,400
