Ivan Leow wins Triton Super Highroller in Sochi
It seems like Malaysian poker players really like their Highroller events. It was just yesterday that we brought you news of Malaysian Michael Soyza taking down the Highroller event at the Asia Pacific Poker Tour. And just about a day later his fellow countryman Ivan Leow has done the same in the Triton Super Highroller at the ongoing partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Russia festival at the Sochi Casino.
The initial 20 entries clubbed with the 9 re-entries took the field to 29 entries in the RUB6,000,000 Triton Poker Super High Roller. The Triton set of high buy-in tournaments is taking place as part of the MILLIONS schedule. The top finishers in this event would end up in the money battling for the biggest share of the more than $2.6 million prizepool collected.
Leow defeated Abraham Passet in heads-up making this his second Triton Poker title in two weeks. Leow has been on quite the heater having made the final table of the RUB 3 million High Roller and unfortunately for him busted that event as the bubble boy. He then entered the Super High Roller and proceeded to almost replicate a similar run in this event too. He played super aggressive playing a number of pots early on and then eventually busted. He fired his second bullet and this time around things definitely went his way at the Sochi Casino and Resort.
This win makes it the fifth 6-figure score for the 36-year-old in 2018 which also includes a title win in the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series which took place in Jeju, South Korea. Leow won the HK$ 500,000 Short Deck Ante-Only event for a payday of just over $1 Million and this win makes it his second Triton title.
Runner-up Passet who is from Germany but has been a resident of the UK for the past three years also made his career-best score with this second-place finish. Wai Leong Chan finsihed in 3rd place while Manig Loeser rounded off the final payout position. Another German player in Dietrich Fast was the money bubble having been eliminated by the eventual winner.
According to PokerNews who were covering the event, Passet gave it a valiant effort in heads-up and even claimed the lead for some time, but after more than an hour Leow had established a commanding lead with sheer aggression. Passet put his hopes on a six-high flush draw on a paired flop and Leow called with jacks and fours to celebrate after two blanks on turn and river.
With the end of this tournament, high stakes leg of Triton Poker events as part of the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Russia comes to an end. However action ontinues in the Millions schedule with Day 2 of the Main Event getting underway today. Stay tuned to Gutshot as we bring you the culmination of this tournament tomorrow.
