James Won Lee ships the Baby Dragon at Jeju

PokerStars LIVE is hosting the Red Dragon 2018 at Jeju, South Korea. The series began on Nov 30 and will go on till Dec 9. The 10-day affair lots of big events lined up for player’s with deep pockets.

 The Baby Dragon KRW 300 Million GTD Event started on Dec 1 and ran till the next day and the champion was crowned. The event had 298 players signing up for it, and the guarantee was surpassed, creating a new prize pool of KRW 312,900,000 (~INR 1.98 Crores).

American poker player James Won Lee shipped the baby for the first-place prize of KRW 74,310,000 (~INR 47.05 Lakhs). He defeated China’s Dong Chen after an adrenaline pumping heads-up display at the Final Table. Lee had a chip lead of 2.2 million over Chen’s 1.56 million entering heads-up.

The former APT Korea Champion Albert Paik was the bubble boy, who got schooled with Jc 8h against black pocket Eights, making him miss out on the KRW 2,190,000 min cash. One other notable elimination was of Pete Chen’s. The WPT Asia-Pacific Player of the Year began the day as the chip leader but lost at 22nd place, without getting ahead.

The table also saw Chi Ying Tsai, the only woman to reach the Final Table. She finished 4th, collecting KRW 24,250,000 in cash after her pocket Fives were dominated by Chen’s pocket Eights.

With Tsai gone, Wei Cheng Yin from Taiwan rounded off the final 3. The three-player action saw a lot of back and forth and there were almost no flops to be seen. After a while, Lee gained the chip lead finding premium hands against Yin. Yin had less than three big blinds left after and couldn’t produce a comeback, taking 3rd place for KRW 30,508,000.

The final hand of the two-player action saw Chen with Ace-ten against Lee’s Ace-five. Lee hit the gutshot straight he wanted and lifted the marvellous Dragon-shaped trophy.

Lee has mostly played in the States and has a couple of cash-outs in Macau, one of which is his biggest live win of $204,973 at the Macau Poker Cup 27 NLH Event in 2017. Another significant win was finishing 4th at the 44th WSOP 2013, Las Vegas in 2013 for $162,240. The Baby Dragon win makes it his second highest career cash and has earned him a second PokerStars LIVE title.

The Champion reacted to his win, “I don’t play many tournaments, maybe five a year so it feels awesome to become the Baby Dragon champion! It’s what I wanted but didn’t expect. Now I want to win the Red Dragon too.
