The European Poker Tour (EPT) has a current stop in the beautiful city of Barcelona, with quite a few big tournaments lined up between 21 August and 2 September. One tournament which came to an end over the weekend was the famous EPT National, which saw an overwhelming field of 4,348 entries taking part, narrowly missing this stop's record.

Coming out on top of this massive field was French poker player, Jean-René Fontaine, who took home a career-best prize of €547,000 (~$635,872) for this effort. He beat some of the top poker pros from around the world, while the 6-handed final table was dominated by French players.

"It is pretty, it is too beautiful, I am very happy ... there is nothing more beautiful! It's a pleasure to play against professionals, I learn a lot. After that, obviously, luck comes into play as well," said Fontaine, after shipping this prestigious tournament, where the top 650 players shared the prize pool with a minimum cash prize of €1,650.

Among those who cashed out in this event were three Indian players, with Mayank Saxena becoming the first to bust after reaching the pay-out stage. He busted in 545th for a prize of €1,650 (~INR 1.34 lakh), while Abhinav Iyer was the next to hit the rail in 506th for €1,810 (~INR 1.47 lakh). The Indian who made the deepest run in the EPT National was Abhisek Panda, finishing 99th for a prize of €4,570 (INR 3.71 lakh).

Final table results:

  1. Jean-René Fontaine - €547,000
  2. Julien Martini - €323,000
  3. Alberto Ah-Dine - €242,000
  4. Claudio Di Giacomo - €197,000
