Meghalaya contemplating running casinos in the state
Over the decades, India has always been very much against gambling, sports betting, poker and others that would come under the general 'gaming' bracket. However, every once in a way, we get some good news of liberalization in this industry, and here's another one we've come to report today.
So far, regions where casinos are allowed include Goa, Sikkim and Daman and Diu, but latest reports in the local daily 'The Shillong Times' suggest that Meghalaya is also contemplating passing a gaming bill and mulling the possibility of running licensed casinos in the state.
Reports say that the administration would like to have a casino come up at Byrnihat, situated in the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. The proposal is still in its initial stages, but the political heads seem eager to have a casino up and running soon in the state, which is good news for Meghalaya as well as the overall gaming industry in India.
Just like the current laws for casinos in Nepal and Sikkim, locals will be banned from entering the casino in Byrnihat, which will avoid the problem of problem gambling in the state. They are pushing the fact that casinos will boost tourism for the state and that could be the main reason for approval of this proposal.
The Meghalaya Prevention of Gambling Act, 1970 will need to be amended in order to make way for the successful operations of casinos in the state. While this move seems likely, the Government is wary about social, religious and moral consequences that could emerge if they go ahead with the proposal.
Over a year back, Meghalaya also showed interest in restarting the state-run lottery. If these happen successfully, many more states across the country may consider amendments to their existing gaming laws. For all such updates and stories, keep following GutshotMagazine.com.
