With poker growing leaps and bounds in the continent of Asia in recent years, plenty of new tours have emerged and one of them was the Asia Poker League (APL), which hosted regular events across Asia in 2018. Yesterday began the APL Road Series Vol.3 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Being played at the Pro Poker Club in HCM, the series is scheduled between 15-25 November and the first tournament to get underway here was the APL Vietnam DeepStack Open (DSO) Main Event. This was the first time APL and DSO partnered to bring a slight taste of the European Tour to this part of Asia.

Eventually, a field of 154 entries registered to the tournament across two starting flights played on the same day. This includes 136 entries from Day 1A (levels of 40 minutes each) and 18 entries from Day 1B Turbo (levels of 15 minutes each). With a buy-in of VND 9,900,000 (~INR 30,500), this tournament began at 1pm local time yesterday.

Throughout the day, many top Asian pros were spotted at the tables, but by the end of the day's play, not many of them were able to bag their chips to progress to the next day. A total of 31 survivors will progress and from them, Vietnam’s very own Nguyen Van Trung holds the lead, with a current stack of 394,000 chips. In second place currently is Singapore’s Norbert Koh.

Trung and Koh were the only two players on the day to cross the 300k mark in chips, and while the former is not very known in the poker industry, the latter is a familiar face in Asian poker. As for the Indian contingent, there are very few players in attendance as there's a huge series being played out in India right now too - 2018 WPT India.

Top 5 chip counts after Day 1 of the APL DSO Event:

  1. Nguyen Van Trung - 394,000
  2. Norbert Koh - 380,500
  3. Phan Trong Linh - 269,000
  4. Nguyen The Anh - 242,500
  5. Xiaoxin He - 239,500
