Peter Jepsen under investigation for high stakes poker fraud
Issues and charges in the poker community keep flashing each day and some of them crop up with entirely different concerns. With the rise of poker around the world, such matter keeps pouring and spilling out. One such incident took place on Monday when a high-stakes Danish pro was found guilty of cheating at online poker.
The Copenhagen City Council seized DKK 26 million of illegal profit from Peter Jepsen and passed a verdict that he will be serving more than 2 years in prison. The Danish poker pro was held for computer-based theft by installing software on another player’s computer. The authorities believe that he executed a plan that allowed him to take advantage of online gambling websites of millions of dollars.
Sitting at 35th in Denmark’s All-Time money list, Jepsen has been recorded for earning his career-best live cash of over $415k in the EPT NLH at Warsaw. From the period of 2008-2014, Jepsen ran the scam against high-stake poker players at high profile stops like European Poker Tour (EPT), as plenty of online players complained about his probable criminal behavior. In 2014, several Danish pros who were victimized by Jepsen filed a complaint against him in Denmark which went on for half a decade before he admitted his guilt.
According to media reports, Danish investigators believe that the player installed Trojans on several computers to cheat which helped him view his opponent’s hole cards and thus win the tournament. However, during the trial, two men and a woman affirmed that the defendant admitted to them having installed spyware on his computer.
The government confiscated $3.9 million more or less the amount that he won from his opponents using unfair means. Monday’s ruling by the court involved a 4-year sentence for Jepsen but six months was reduced due to the overly long trial. However, the convicted player has pleaded not guilty to the indictment.
