Phil Hellmuth wins 2019 Borgata Winter Open Heads-Up NLHE
One of the prestigious tournament series currently underway is the WPT Borgata Poker Open, in Borgata Casino and Spa, Atlantic City, New Jersey. The series began on 15th January and will run till 1st February. The Opening event of the series was won by Pascal Zaklama for a little over $328k.
Another one of the side-events in the series was the Event #16 $1,590 Heads-Up NLH. The event was hosted on 26th January, and the winner to emerge was acclaimed pro and poker celebrity Phil Hellmuth. He took home $37,248 (~INR 26.53 Lakhs) after playing six rounds of heads-up in all. The win is Hellmuth’s first for the year and comes after a big gap of over 6 months, having won an event back in 2018 WSOP and earned his record 15th WSOP bracelet.
Coming to the WPT series, each round in the Heads-Up NLH was a best of 3 format where Hellmuth defeated American pro Wenhao Ying in the first round. The second saw him beating another US pro Tim Reilly. The third to succumb to Hellmuth’s fatal blow was Travis Greenawalt after Reilly.
About Greenwalt, Hellmuth told the press, “He handled himself very well and I may have even gotten lucky a few times.’ Hellmuth tweeted before the final heads-up saying:
After kicking the first three players to the rail, who were all fellow Americans, the trend was continued by busting American Steven Sarimiento in fourth round. After Sarimiento busted, the finals was on against Joey Cappello, which lasted for about three hours.
The last hand of the tournament took place at Level 6 with blinds at 500/1,000. Cappello shoved his last four big blinds with Queen-seven suited. Hellmuth made the call with King-nine off-suit. The board turned nothing for Cappello and went in favour of Hellmuth. Capello later had to settle for $18,624 as the runner-up cash prize.
“The man played amazing and certainly did not give his chips away,” Hellmuth said about his final heads-up opponent Capello. Capello also showcased some amazing poker skills. He defeated the likes of 2014 EPT Barcelona SHR winner Oliver Busquet, and Alex Queen to play against the 15-time WSOP bracelet winner in final HU.
