Sharapova advances at US Open; top seeds keep falling
Yesterday, we spoke about how all the top seeds at the women's competition in the last few grand slams have had early exits, which has led to quite a few players winning their maiden grand slams in the last couple of years. The 2018 edition of the US Open has been no different.
The tournament began with a shock exit on the first day itself, with the women's top seed Simona Halep being ousted while a couple of days later, #2 seed Caroline Wozniacki made an exit from the Flushing Meadows. Now, a few more top seeds leave New York, with #4 seed Angelique Kerber losing in three sets and #5 seed Petra Kvitova losing in straight sets.
On the other hand, it has been a good run for #22 seed Maria Sharapova, winning her Round 3 game in straight sets against Jelena Ostapenko, thus equally her best US Open run since the 2012 tournament. This has been one of her best tournaments since returning from her doping ban and we all want her to keep going.
She last won a grand slam in 2014 and this is a good chance for her to get another one under her belt, with her Round 4 game against Carla Suarez Navarro, seeded #30. "I thrive on playing under the lights for some reason. I love that. I love that challenge," said Sharapova after her last win.
The men's competition went more-or-less as expected, except when Philipp Kohlschreiber completed a shock win over the #4 seed Alexander Zverev, in straight sets that too. "Kohlschreiber has everything. He can use a lot of top spin, can hit the ball flat, use a lot of slice. He can mix it up well. It’s tough to get a rhythm against him sometimes,” said Zverev after this loss.
