WPT Australia: Liam Doyle wins Australia Opening Event
World Poker Tour (WPT) is back in action once again, this time paving its way to Gold Coast in Australia and decorating the Asia-Pacific region with its charm. The tournament began on 27 September and will run till 7 October, and already several smaller side events have concluded so far.
Yesterday saw the wrapping up of the first featured event AU$1,000 Australia Opening Event. The 3-day long tournament saw a field of 292 players who entered for a buy-in of AU$1,000. A prize pool of AU$292,000 was formed to be shared among the top 37 players who would eventually receive a paycheck.
The action intensified on the final day before the climactic heads-up battle began between New Zealand’s Liam Doyle and Mexico’s Angel Guillen–Pereda. The latter’s countrymate Cam Adams finished in third place and bagged AU$29,112. Adams is a well-known pro poker sitting 3rd in Mexico’s All-Time money list with his live earnings of $1.9 million. His last big tournament finish was 13th in €1,100 Hyper-Turbo at European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona.
After a few hours of intense grinding, Doyle finally had his hands upon the top prize money of AU$ 64,368 (~INR 30.73 Lakhs). He walked out with his first recorded title and biggest live score so far.

With various side events lined up on the schedule and buy-ins ranging from $330 to $5,000. All eyes, however, will now be looking at the $2,500 WPT Australia Main Event which will begin on 4 – 7 October for a buy-in which will be headlining the series.
