$100,00 deadly prop bet ends prematurely

Earlier this month, we reported an insane prop bet that was on between two fairly well-known poker players. World Series of Poker (WSOP) Asia Pacific bracelet winner, Australia’s Rory Young offered $100,000 to American pro Rich Alati if he locks himself up in a pitch-dark bathroom for 30 days straight.

Young was quoted as saying, “The conditions are complete darkness, so no electronics, no light-emitting devices, no drugs of any kind. He is allowed any type of food that he wants. He has a bed in there, he has a shower and a bathtub. He has pretty lavish toiletries like Epsom salts, sugar scrubs, that kind of stuff.

Alati was locked up was an undisclosed location in Las Vegas, and he entered the place on Nov 21. There was also a private live stream hosted for Alati’s relatives and loved ones, so they could monitor his health and keep themselves updated.

After 20 days of living in the isolation chamber, Alati pulled out when he and Young were making arrangements for a food delivery. They both decided on $62K as the bet amount that Alati would earn after 20 days of darkness. Apparently, it wasn’t Alati’s decision to terminate the bet. It was Young who offered the deal to Alati to help him see the light early.

In addition to this, Young also agreed to pay all expenses facilitating the bet, from food to other supplies. Scientifically speaking, the kind of prop bet was set to fail from the beginning. Previous studies dating back to as early as 1951 show that solitary confinement was practically impossible to maintain for longer periods of more than a week.

Dr. Stuart Grassian of Washington University, an expert in psychiatric effects of solitary confinement, was quoted in USPoker as saying, “The risk is a little different because he has the opportunity to get out. He could start hallucinating. He could start feeling paranoid. There’s even a risk of suicide. You’d have to hope that if he got mentally sick in there he would recognize it and get out rather than continuing to plunge deeper into mental illness.

“I think it’s a stupid and crazy thing to do,” Grassian confessed. The prop bet was settled in an amicable manner with Alati coming out unscathed, but this bet received a decent coverage worldwide and could possibly trigger another insane prop bet in the future.
