3 Indians progress from Day 2 of EPT Barcelona Main Event


The European Poker Tournament (EPT) €5,300 Main Event is taking place in Salon Gaudi at Casino Barcelona and concluded its Day 2 setting a new attendance record. Barcelona waits for its big Day 3 that will take place on September 1.

The festival allowed late registration for the event that remained open until the start of the day. Another 28 entries joined on Day 2, creating a new record of 1,988 entries in order to create a prize pool of €9.6 million. The game witnessed all 700 plus poker players who grabbed their seats, eventually the field was cut down to 191 players only.

The leading Day 2 player was Simon Mattsson who ended the day with 1,191,000 chips playing ahead of Alexis Ibarrola. With live earnings of $1.3 million, Mattsson first recorded a live tournament cash in 2011.

The event observed 3 active Indian players who made it through Day 2. Sunil Chutani with 483,000 chips was ahead of the average stack, while the other two well-known Indian poker players Kunal Punjwani with 242,000 chips and Ramandeep Gujral with 173,000. The other 5 players got busted as the game narrowed down to 191 participants, with one finishing in the money – Sumit Asrani, who took home €8,390 (~INR 6.69 Lakh).

The notable players of Day 2 include Andres Korn (974,000), Jean Ferreira (910,000), Stefan Fabian (810,000), Marian Mik (792,000), Ben Farrell (760,000), Shannon Shorr (734,000), Diego Falcone (698,000) and French rapper Bruno Lopes (508,000).

Top 10 Day 2 chip counts:

  1. Simon Mattsson – 1,191,000
  2. Alexis Ibarrola – 1,069,000
  3. Andres Korn – 974,000
  4. Jean Ferreira – 910,000
  5. Stefan Fabian – 810,000
  6. Marian Mik – 792,000

  9. Adam Jonsson – 733,000
  10. Ramiro Petrone – 722,000

A total of 1,988 participants appeared on Day 2 and only 296 players received a payout, each getting a minimum of €8,390. The remaining players will take home minimum of €10k. The biggest flagship festival will resume on the final day at 12 noon local time until a winner is announced.
