The latest news to hit the poker and sports world in the US is 888 apparently signing on as a sponsor to the New York Jets, an American football team competing in their National Football League (NFL). The reason this has come under the scanner is because NFL regulations forbid sports betting sites from advertising in the league. News of the signing broke in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Visitors to the 888 site could see a label on its website proclaiming ‘proud sponsors of New York Jets’ however there is no official word from the NFL team. But any Jets fans who made it to the game on Sunday night were exposed to the bright orange 888.com banners on display outside the MetLife Stadium. While there was no mention of 888’s sportsbook brand on the banners, there is a pretty clearly displayed image of a football player. Next to this image is a link which takes the website visitor straight to the sportsbook portal. According to NFL’s policy, no sports betting brand is allowed advertise these services else they will be in violation.
NFL rules forbid any advertising of sports betting sites due to concerns over the spread of problem gambling, especially among the younger generation. Yet it seems that 888 and the Jets may have found a loophole, which could be a growing concern for the NFL further down the line. The NFL reversed a ban on casino advertising this season; so far, officials at the Jets, NFL and 888 have all declined to comment on the sponsorship deal.
