Alex Lynskey wins WSOPC Sydney Main Event

The AUD 4.5 million GTD World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) began at The Star, Sydney on 27th November and was in the books on 17th December. The series was the biggest circuit in the history of WSOP Sydney Circuits. There was plenty of high-stakes action to be seen at the 21-day poker gala.

Among them was the AUD 20K High Roller and the champion to be crowned there was Luke Martinelli of Australia itself, beating a field of 50 entries. The Main Event of the series went on for 7 days and boasted a seven-figure amount of AUD 2,100,000 in guaranteed prize money.

After a long haul of 7 days and after beating a field of 1,191 total entries for the Main Event, Australia’s very own Alex Lynskey emerged victorious, taking home AUD 442,796 (~INR 2.25 Crores) as 1st place cash prize out of the prize pool of AUD 2,382,000 (~INR 12.12 Crores), significantly crossing the guarantee.

He beat another well-known Australian pro Matthew Pongrass, who took home AUD 262,020 as the runner-up cash prize. Luke Martinelli finished 4th and bagged AUD 145,302 for it. Talking about his win, Lynskey said, “I feel fantastic. It went crazy fast in the end. I was expecting the Final Table to last seven to eight hours, but it went way quicker and smoother than I expected, especially with those five knockouts in the first 45 minutes.

Entering heads-up, Pongrass had an almost 6:1 ship lead against Lynskey. Further gameplay saw Pongrass bullying Lynskey down to just 3 million chips at one point, but things were not to be the same again. Lynskey rose from the ashes. He was risking his Ace-ten against Pongrass’ pocket Kings and was on the verge of being eliminated. But an Ace flopped and Lynskey instantly earned a double up. It didn’t even take an hour after that for Lynskey to ship the tournament.

The final hand saw Pongrass call all-in with pocket Sevens and had Lynskey’s pocket Three’s overshadowed. The river of Three came and spelled doom for Pongrass. Lynskey swept the whole table clean and bagged the title along with it. This win is a significant addition to Lynskey’s bankroll, but the 7th ranker in Australia’s All Time Money List isn’t new to shipping tournaments all over the world, having started his career in 2011. His biggest live win was finishing 7th at the recent 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event for a staggering amount of $1,500,000.

Final Table Pay-outs –

  1. Alex Lynskey – AUD 422,796
  2. Matt Pongrass – AUD 262,020
  3. Rahul Rastogi – AUD 192,299
