APL Kickoff Event crowns Kjell Ove Dyb as champion!

Asia has become a significant hub for live poker tournaments and recently, the Asian Poker League (APL), one of the leading poker brands in the region, paved its way back to its anticipated Vietnamese stop in Ho Chi Minh City at the Pro Poker Club. The overall series is scheduled between 4–11 October and the Opening Event of every tournament is something that most players look forward to.

The APL Kickoff Event attracted a healthy number of 275 players who entered for a buy-in of VND 6.6 million to create a prize pool of VND 1.6 billion to be shared among the top 41 players. Eventually, the event saw Norway’s Kjell Ove Dyb walking away with VND 407,600,000, championing the evening.

The final table saw 9 players amidst the action, including 2018 KO Bounty APL Road Series winner Hwang Jae Yeol finishing 9th, 2018 APPT Korea, Incheon winner Yew Fatt Kan finishing at 4th place, while the Vietnamese duo of Duy Lam Nguyen and Khoi Nguyen were seeking to keep the opening event title in home territory. The latter, however, was the one who made it to heads up but unfortunately fell short of claiming the title when Dyb eliminated Khoi in second place, claiming the victory in heads up and taking the top prize.

With total live earnings $3,17,427, Dyb sits at 53rd position in Norway’s All-Time money list. His career-best live win was 2018 APL Top Gun in Ho Chi Minh. Winning the Kickoff Event, he has added another feather to his poker cap.

The opening event has certainly brought plenty of action. Among the key events in the schedule is the VND15 million Main Event which got underway on Sunday afternoon.
