PokerStars LIVE is easily one of the most prestigious names in live poker around the world and as part of their Asia-Pac operations, they have something called the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) which recently completed a very successful event in Manila, which also recorded the biggest ever APPT series prize pool in Philippines history!
It included 10 days and 25 events, and the prestigious Main Event saw 1,135 entrants from 39 different countries competing for PHP 64,405,575 (~INR 8.74 Crore) in prize money, with 135 of the top players finishing in the money. Indians players to cash in the ME were Vivek Singh (74th for PHP 167,500), Anant Purohit (39th for PHP 231,500), and Sahil Chutani, who finished 8th for a massive prize of PHP 1,288,000 (~INR 17.48 Lakh).
By the end of it all, it was Philippines’ very own Florencio Campomanes who claimed the crown and the massive top prize to go with it, also becoming the first Filipino to win the APPT Main Event title. Play came to an end after a 2-way deal in heads-up which saw Campomanes taking away the title and the bigger prize of PHP 11,092,500 (~INR 1.5 Crore).
“It’s taken me 13 years; this is my biggest result ever! Before this it was third in Macau for APPT [APPT 9 Macau 2015] with less players but a bigger buy-in. I had no chance to win that one, I was basically short from 22 players and I managed to ladder till third by running like God and other people not knowing what to do and I just kept jumping, jumping, so…,” said Campomanes, who retired from being a poker professional in 2018.
