Gavin Flynn ships APT Finale Short Deck Event

The Asian Poker Tour (APT) began its final stop of this year at Resorts World Manila, Philippines on Nov 27. The series is a 10-day extravaganza, with a variety of event lined up to give players of all bankrolls and inclinations a chance to play.

There are single day events also being hosted each day and yesterday saw the NLH “Short Deck” (Shot Clock) declare its champion. Main Event Day 2 was also simultaneously being conducted. The short deck event had a buy-in of  PHP16,500. A total of 51 players participated in the event. Due to short deck’s still nascent player base the players are still not ready to try it out yet, but because its growing appearance in many Asian tournament series the game is rising in popularity.

For people who aren’t aware of short deck or six-plus hold’em, it is a game variant of poker where only A K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 cards are in play. In this variant, flush ranks higher than a full house and three-of-a-kind ranks higher than a straight. This is where the differences between Short Deck and normal hold’em stop. Rest of the gameplay is exactly same. Pros like Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan have expressed their enthusiasm for this variant.

Ireland’s Gavin Flynn shipped the event yesterday at Manila, defeating Azusa Maeda in heads-up. The final hand saw Flynn’s 10s 8d straight beating Maeda’s Qh 10h on a board of 9h 7d7c Jh Js. Flynn bagged the award and the cash prize of PHP 222,500 (~INR 2.96 Lakhs).

Flynn has played live for quite some time now, beginning his recorded career in 2010 in Ireland. His best live score is $39,807 for finishing 1^st in the NLH High Rollers at the APT HCMC 2018 in July this year. The player has shown a few good poker plays and winning the short deck, one of the budding variants in poker, will boost his confidence even more for future tournaments.
