Goa Lions will not participate in Match IPL Season 3

In a very recent development, Goa Lions, one of the ten teams scheduled to play in the third season of the Match Indian Poker League (Match IPL) has withdrawn from the league. The franchise team alleged that Match IPL is not fulfilling its contractual obligations and they thus have refused to participate.

After two successful seasons, Match IPL Season 3 was scheduled to take place between 23-24 October in Mumbai and they’ve hit a small setback with the Goa Lions withdrawing from the competition. Ability Games Pvt. Ltd. is the owner of the Goa Lions and they have accused MIPL of not honouring their commitments.

These include not holding a poker player auction as well as not conducting the league in the ‘match poker’ format which is supposed to use electronic devices. They mentioned that the league doesn’t have a software for conducting match poker and is conducting the event using physical cards. This highly increases the chances of mistakes and other irregularities.

Thus, Ability Games refused to pay the sum of INR 50 lakh due to Match IPL for participating in the upcoming season of the league, which led to the latter sending Ability Games a termination notice. Ability Games then went to the Bombay High Court (single judge bench of Justice SJ Kathawala) to challenge this termination of contract.

The court directed Ability Games to deposit the amount of INR 50 lakh due to Match IPL to the Prothonotary and Senior Master of the HC within 2 weeks. This fee will then be disbursed as per the adjudication made by the sole arbitrator, Advocate Ranjeev Carvalho, appointed by Ability Games.

Viaan Industries Chairman and MD, Raj Kundra, commented on the situation saying, “We are happy that the court has made Goa Lions submit the pending license fee of Rs. 50 lakhs and moved the case to arbitration. The (next season of the) league will go on with the remaining 9 teams.”
