Gutshot Poker Dictionary – Burn Card

Poker in today’s time has become one of the most famous games played not only among the youth but across all age groups. It is therefore important that all poker enthusiasts, especially newbies are aware of the poker terms and rules followed during the game. Today we’re writing about the term ‘Burn Card’.

While playing Texas hold’em as well as Omaha hold’em in casinos or other formal games, a card is burned before dealing the flop, turn, and river, for a maximum of 3 total burn cards.

The term burn refers to discarding the top card from the deck rather than dealing it to the table. In live games, it is common for the dealer to burn cards before dealing on every street. This is done in order to protect any form of cheating, intentional or not intentional. Poker is an extremely fair game and every rule is framed accordingly. Burning the top card before distributing from the deck does not influence the probability of a certain card being dealt in any way. 

Burning cards are also done to provide extra cards for use when an irregularity of play occurs. Sometimes a misdealt card could be used as the burn card— the card should be immediately placed face up on the deck after the deal is complete. An accidental slip by the dealer might expose the value of the top card to observant players. By following a strict burn policy, it makes it harder for any dealer to cheat at the table. Burning is most often performed in casinos to deter a form of cheating known as card marking.
