Jason Koon, American pro who ran deep in multiple 2018 Triton tournaments and even registered a win in the 2018 Triton Montenegro, is back again and has recorded his 2nd major Triton title this time. He won Event #5 HKD 1 million Short Deck NLHE today for an awesome first-place cash prize of HKD 22.3 million (~INR 19.86 Crores).
Koon, after becoming the brand ambassador of Triton recently, has secured an extraordinary title win. He has now jumped 3 places higher in USA’s All Time Money List, beating Dan Smith, Phil Ivey and Steve O’Dwyer in terms of recorded live cashes which totalled to $26.9 million after this victory.
The schedule of the 2019 Triton SHR series is such that there is no 4th Event or a 4th Seat at the table since according to Chinese tradition, number 4 is unlucky and could bring bad fate. So, there are only 6 events in the series till Event #7 and the first 4 have already seen its winners declared.
Coming to Koon, he finished on the Final Table in two events in this edition. First on 3rd March where he finished 4th in the HKD 500k NLH Short Deck and second where he finished 6th on the following day in HKD 500k NLH 6-Handed. China’s Devan Tang and Malaysia’s Michael Soyza won these events respectively.
Koon spoke to the on-site press about his win saying, “I wanted to come in and just stay focused and adapt on the fly and stick with what good strategies are. It worked out for me. I had great cards, it’s really what it comes down to a lot of the time in these tournaments. A lot of good things happened to me at this final table. If anybody else would have been in my seat, it would have happened to them.”
In heads-up, Koon was pitted against Paul Phua, a Malaysian businessman by profession along with being a co-founder of Triton. Phua was fresh from being acquitted in a long sports betting case. It was an exciting Triton Ambassador vs Triton Co-Founder battle. Some back and forth between them happened a couple times but in the later part of the battle, Koon was looking at stack of 20M and was gearing up to deal the final fatal blow to his opponent.
