Li Xiao Xiang triumphs in APL Kunming Main Event

The APL Road Series was underway at the Wilo Intelligent Transportation Hall in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. The festival was hosted by Asia Poker League (APL) and began on 8^th March 2019. The Main Event of the series itself drew a record 1,043 entries and crossed the guarantee by a huge margin.

On the final day, the Final Table of 9, which consisted of all Chinese players, contested tooth and nail for the kill-shot first-place cash prize. But it was ultimately Li Xiao Xiang that emerged victorious and took home a staggering CNY 868,200 (~INR 89.32 Lakhs), all thanks to the brimming prize pool.

After his win, Xiang said, “This is my moment, and this is the moment that keeps me move ahead my poker career […] I don’t care how people look at me […]. Now I really, really want to thank my wife. Without her support I couldn’t make it.” The wife is happy about the title and especially the monies that came with it.

The Main Event field consisted of top pros like Li Yan, Ji Xia Qing, and Zhang Xiao Jin, all local Chinese players. Top 113 places were in the money (min-cash CNY 7.7k) and Zhang Ze Yu filled in as the bubble boy on Day 2 of the event.

Heads-up saw Xiang against Yang Yun. Xiang held a good chip lead of 2:1 and swiftly brought the tournament to a halt by snap-calling Yun’s shove with Sevens. Yun showed a Jack and an Eight on a board that didn’t bring him any luck and Xiang’s Sevens held good. Yun settled for CNY 591,800 as the runner-up cash prize.
