Nikita Luther second in WPT500 Aria; gets career-best score

Just yesterday we spoke about how Nikita Luther made the Final Table of the WPT500 Las Vegas Main Event at the Aria Resort and Casino, Las Vegas. We also spoke about how this poker pro from Delhi has been extremely consistent in the last couple of years, winning a bracelet in 2018 and Final Tabling this same WPT500 event in 2017, where she finished 5th for $65,000.

The Adda52 Pro has been busy making everyone proud in just the last 2 years since she turned to a full-time poker professional. Now, she has gone one step further than her 2017 finish at Aria and recorded a runner-up finish in the same event. She finished second to only Ben Farrell and earned a huge pay-out of $109,300 (~INR 75.36 Lakh).

Gutshot recently launched its print magazine for the June-August period and Nikita Luther was featured in the cover story. She told us how she intended to do well at Aria in 2019 and she really wasn’t lying, bagging what becomes the highest live cash of her career, beating the 2018 bracelet victory amount. However, knowing Luther, she will be disappointed that she didn’t take home the title.

Hundred-odd Indian men have been playing poker in Las Vegas since the last month or so but none of them have been able to cash as high as Luther did a couple of hours back. In fact, this is India’s first 6-figure score of the summer and it should inspire our Indian contingent for the next couple of weeks at the 2019 World Series of Poker (WSOP). Who says this is only a male’s sport?

Coming back to this WPT500 Event, Luther began the day third in chips among the final 9 players and each of them was guaranteed at least $14,000 in prize money. However, she kept up with her advantage and took it all the way to heads-up where she was against UK’s Ben Farrell.

Luther knocked out Sung Joo Hyun in 3rd place and took the lead going into heads-up play with 21.1 million chips over her opponent’s 17.5 million. However, the intense battle saw several swings and Farrell eventually building a major lead, even though it was Luther who drew first blood in heads-up.

A major pot was Luther AK vs Farrell’s AQ which saw the latter pairing a Queen on the turn. Eventually, Luther faced a chip deficit of over 1:8 and she shoved all-in with KQ only to get a call from Farrell who had A5. She needed to pair something on the board but with A9666 opening up, Farrell hit a pair early on and improved to a Sixes full of Aces full house to win the title and grab his career-best live score as well.
