Poker pro Susie Zhao found dead in Michigan


Times are difficult for people all over the world and while several of us are struggling to cope up with the quarantine life there are other news making headlines and saddening the gaming and poker industry. The White Lake Township Police Department released the identity of a “badly burned” body found last week in a parking area. The woman has been identified as Susie Zhao, a poker player from Waterford Township.

The police said a resident found the remains at around 8 am in a Department of Natural Resources parking area. The woman was believed to be between 20-30 age group, approximately 5 feet and 3 inches tall, weighing 120-135 pounds. Zhao had moved around after working for Crankbook Schools. The publication reported she spent a significant amount of time in California before moving to Waterford Township in June with her parents.

Poker industry is grieving for the 33-year-old. According to Zhao’s Hendon Mob, she has nine World Series of Poker (WSOP) cashes. Having made several deep runs in the WSOP Main Event in 2012, 2015 and 2017, her career-best remains 2012 WSOP ME where she finished 90th for $73,805. She sits 96th in Michigan’s all time money list with over $221K in lifetime earnings. Her last recorded cash came in 2017 for finishing 81st in The Commernce Poker Series Main $18,693.

According to her Facebook profile, Zhao lived in Los Angeles and was a regular in the cash games in the area and even appeared on ‘Live at the Bike’. The investigation behind Zhao’s murder is ongoing. Anyone who has information about her whereabouts on 11 July through 13 July are asked to contact Hild at 248-698-4404 ext. 2381.

Clayton Fletcher who played with Zhao in 2015 ME said, “She was one of the bubbliest and most vivacious opponents I’ve ever had. She was a very strong player who also liked to have fun at the table.”
