‘Poker Queens’ a new documentary of women in poker world.

“Women are meant to be loved and not to play poker” writes Amarillo Slim in his autobiography in 1972 World Champion which highlights the issue of the gender disparity in the game of poker that still exists in the 21st century. The release of a new documentary, ‘Poker Queens’, directed by Sandra Mohr and Executive Producer, Christine Beatty attempts to showcase prominent female players over the past several decades.

The upcoming documentary throws light upon the female Poker Hall of Fame Members like Linda Johnson, Barbara Enright and Jennifer Harman. It mainly revolves around those women who are chasing the biggest prize in poker i.e. the WSOP Main Event title like Maria Ho, Kristen Bicknell, Lauren Roberts, Kathy Liebert, Jennifer Tilly, Kristy Arnett, Linda Johnson, Kelly Minkin, and Jan Fisher. The teaser of the documentary film uploaded on YouTube clearly mentions that “Less than 10% poker players are women”.

This film is surely going to interest Indian viewers as one of the well-known pros from the domestic circuit Muskan Sethi is also one of the players featured. Sethi breaks away from the notions of the mainstream Indian society that still considers poker as a taboo. Sethi, who is a brand ambassador for PokerStars India, started her poker journey like many Indians playing Zynga poker on Facebook and eventually ended up qualifying for the poker show Shark Cage. She has also received a prestigious national award given to pioneering women by the President of India, “This is passion and mind sport and not just gambling”, says the 20-something Delhi resident.

American pro Jennifer Harman was just eight years old her mother taught her to play poker which turned out to be her lifelong career. Mohr herself says, “Women are just now starting to take back their power, it’s going to be amazing to see the change in the years to come.” Skill and strategy are possessed by both men and women so there is no reason why there should be such a disparity in the numbers.

This documentary will showcase the lives of these women in poker and will hopefully inspire more women to get more active in their participation of this game. ‘Poker Queens: Glamour, Glitz, Guts, Glory: They’re All In’ is to premiere on Amazon Prime this November and we hope this will be a worldwide release.
