PokerStars.in starts monthly 5 Lakh MTT leaderboard

PokerStars is a brand that’s in the upper echelons of the worldwide poker industry, conducting a hoard of live tours all over the planet. The Stars Group managed website is the largest online poker site in the world, controlling over two-thirds of the total online poker market.

They have a pretty decent presence in India as well, with their PokerStars.in platform. The website hosts plenty of tournaments, some of them being Spin & Go, Daily Bigs, Hot Turbos, etc. They have just recently announced another new feature on their site for the first time, the Multi-Table Tournament (MTT) Leader Board, having a guarantee of INR 5 Lakhs each month.

The MTT Leader Board will award its players based on their performance between 00:00 IST on the first day of the month and 23:59 IST on the last day of the month. Every time players finish in the top 15% of a regular MTT, they will be awarded Tournament Leader Board (TLB) points.

The points awarded will vary depending on factors such as the buy-in of the tournament, the number of people playing and the finishing position of the player. Player’s top 20 best tournament performances during the month will be taken into account for deciding the rank.

The guarantee of INR 5 Lakhs will be shared proportionately between top 20 players ranked on the leaderboard. The first place will win a wholesome INR 1,10,000 for his/her spectacular finish.

Sometime in October this year, PokerStars had run the ‘Diwali Rush’ on their website, their maiden attempt at organizing any kind of tournament series in India. The Main Event of the series became a major success, drawing a total of 501 entries and creating a prize pool of INR 35+ Lakhs. Joey Saha ended victorious in the tournament, taking home upwards of INR 6 Lakhs.

Rafi Ashkenazi, CEO of The Stars Group, responded to a query related to PokerStars’ progress in the Indian market saying, “It’s very early days for India. To an extent I can say that the product is not really ready in full for the market. There are a few elements that we still need to—a few gaps that we still need to close before we start our marketing campaign, probably in Q4, more towards Q4 of this year. You can refer to India currently as a soft launch where we’ll increase focus on this market probably starting in Q4”.

With this feature, PokerStars seems to have plans for further penetration into the Indian online poker market, which currently has a few strong players on the helm for a long time.

NOTE: Satellite tournaments, Sit & Go tournaments with less than 40 players, heads-up tournaments, shootout tournaments, restricted-entry tournaments, private tournaments, play money tournaments and Stars Rewards Freerolls do not count towards the rankings.
