Romain Arnaud wins Super High Roller at Jeju

PokerStars LIVE is hosting the PokerStars Jeju Red Dragon 2018 festival at the Jeju Shinhwa World in the Landing Casino, Jeju, South Korea. The series began on Nov 30 and will go on till Dec 9, a 10-day period, and has a lot of high-stakes events lined up with big guarantees.

Yesterday saw 6 players play at the Final Table of the first Super High Roller event of the festival. The event had a guaranteed prize pool of KRW 1 billion but after witnessing 44 entries, including 13 re-entries, the guarantee was crushed generating more than doubling the prize pool to KRW 2,508,000,000 (~INR 15.84 Crores), making it the biggest ever prize pool for a Korean-based PokerStars tournament.

France pro and cash game expert Romain Arnaud shipped the event and took home a colossal KRW 748,000,000 (~INR 4.7 Crores) after defeating fellow countryman Rui Cao in heads-up. Both the players agreed on an ICM split before entering heads-up. The deal saw Cao bag KRW 694,100,000 out of the prize pool, playing for the trophy and title.

The all-French heads-up battle saw a blind all-in shoot out for the trophy after the deal was struck. Arnaud was leading in chips the entire day but lost the first hand and it took him four more hands to secure the 1st place and the trophy. The final hand saw Arnaud with Kc 8c beating Cao’s 10c 2d on a Qc Jd 5c Ah Jh board.

This is Arnaud’s first ever live win and his second cash out in any recorded live event. His first was finishing 9th at the Triton Highroller series in 2016, winning $207,429. This victory brings Arnaud’s total live winnings up to $875,000, just from two events.

Both Arnaud and Cao are excellent poker players who also happen to be good friends, hailing from the same country and all.

Everyone played well at the final table, and it was nice to end up playing heads-up against my very good friend Rui Cao,” said Arnaud after his victory. “It’s a good feeling, but I’m predominantly a cash game player and that’s what I’ll be sticking to.

Other notables to rank in the top 6 were the Malaysian pro and 2018 EPT Barcelona High Roller winner Michael Soyza and the 2018 WSOP LEON’s High Roller winner Ivan Seng Yee Leow.
