Sumit Sapra beats Eka Vedantham to SSS Sun SuperStack title

Yesterday seemed to be a day for fantastic sporting finishes. First, Manchester City pipped Liverpool by one point after 38 weeks of English Premier League action to win the title. Next, Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Super Kings by just one run in the IPL 2019 final, to win their 4th title. Turns out, the excitement was no less on the virtual felts of Spartan Poker either.

It was the final day of the Spartan Super Series (SSS) Gold Edition and one of the highlight tournaments of the day was SSS Event #37 Sunday SuperStack INR 25 Lakh GTD. Here, 530 entries meant the guarantee was passed and a new and inflated prize pool of INR 26.5 Lakh was generated.

The top 47 places were paid with the min-cash being INR 15,105 and if you see the number of big names in the money and on the Final Table, you will understand why we say it was an intense finish. The likes of Gokul Raj (44th), Goonjan Mall (37th), Mayank Jaggi (33rd), Ashish Ahuja (26th), Rajat Mahajan (22nd), and Abhinav Iyer (10th) ran deep but took away small cash prizes.

Eventually, the competition heated up and the FT was packed with Spartan Poker regs including Pulkit Goyal aka ‘Championplayer’ (8th), Kanishka Samant aka ‘Wildflower’ (7th), former Millionaire winner Bunty Batra aka ‘hitesh bhai’ (6th), recent SuperStack winner Dhruvin Kothari aka ‘dhruvinkothari’ (4th), and Guneet Kwatra aka ‘guntz’, the latter finishing 3rd for INR 2.45 Lakh.

Heads-up was also between two very well-known names in the industry – Sumit Sapra aka ‘holla@yoboy’ and Eka Vedantham aka ‘gettingthere’. Both have plenty of online poker titles and yesterday, it was Sapra who managed to stay composed in the HU session and add to his trophy cabinet, winning a massive prize of INR 5,16,485 for shipping the tournament.

As for Vedantham, he would have to be content with the runner-up prize of INR 3,28,070 after firing two bullets to get there. It turned out to be a hectic and extremely long grind for both these players, as what began at 8:30pm last night ended today morning at 5:07am, when the tournament was in Level #48.

Talking about the tournament, Sapra said, “One opponent had a pretty big chip lead throughout the final 2 tables and the FT but I wasn’t too worried as I was confident of taking him on HU, but we got into a huge pot when there were 4 left and I managed to eliminate him in that hand. I managed to run deep in the SSS Main Event as well but busted in 16th place.”
