Sumit Sapra signed as Asia Poker League ambassador

In the past couple of years, Indians have been making giant strides in global poker, running deep and winning titles across Asia and even other western countries. The most recent development we’ve heard about is that of Indian poker pro Sumit Sapra being brought on as a brand ambassador of the Asia Poker League (APL)!

APL hosts regular poker events across Asia including Vietnam, Taiwan, China, and other locations. Their most recent stop was in Hanoi and the next series is APL Da Nang which will take place between 12-21 December in Vietnam. APL recently concluded the deal with Sapra and it will come into effect starting from this upcoming series in Da Nang.

APL has been venturing into new locations in the last year and the brand has seen massive numbers in their various events across Asia. They have a team of ambassadors from various Asian countries called ‘Da Dors’ and this latest development could help them grow their Indian participation as well. Who knows, we could even have an APL India edition soon!

Gutshot caught up with James Kim, Executive Managing Director of Asia Poker League, who commented on this partnership, saying, “We have known each other for a while now and I’ve been following Sumit Sapra’s career on and off the felt. He is very soft spoken and approachable, two key factors in the decision-making process. Furthermore, we believe he can represent us in India and worldwide too, as Sumit is known for his poker travels.”

He also spoke about his team of ambassadors, saying, “We are looking to synergize with our ambassadors to create poker content and promotions that have not been available before, like vlogs, YouTube, etc. Each of our ambassadors ‘Da Dors’ have unique qualities and APL will support them to accelerate in this industry.”

Some of these ambassadors include Mike ‘Iron’ Takayama (Philippines), Tony ‘Kingfish’ Khoang (Netherlands/Vietnam), Hong Kong Game Club (HKGC) founder Ricky ‘HKPokerGodFather’ Cheung (Hong Kong), Singapore Poker League (SPL) founder Jack ‘Sharkdonk’ Liew, Jack ‘Captain Jack’ Wu (Taiwan) and now the latest from India being Sumit ‘Mr. Green’ Sapra.

Sapra needs no introduction to the poker world. He had his first live cash nearly a decade ago in an India Poker Championship event in Goa. Since then, he has accumulated over $220k in live cashes across the world and has been a regular in APL events of late. He will start promoting the brand from this upcoming series in Da Nang, which begins on 12 December!

When we reached out to Sapra, he said, “I’m excited to partner with APL in their efforts to spread the beautiful game of poker across Asia and beyond. I’ve known the APL crew for a while and have enjoyed playing at all their events and spending time with them off the felts too. In fact one of my recent big live score was at the APL HR in November last year in Vietnam and I hope I can start this new collaboration with a nice score at the upcoming APL Finale in Da Nang next week.”
