WPT postpones televised FTs due to coronavirus

Counted among the oldest and major live poker tours, the World Poker Tour (WPT) is one of the trusted names in poker besides of course, the World Series of Poker (WSOP). Casinos have ceased operations in this era of Coronavirus as safety is of utmost importance. Major names in the industry are supporting the cancellation and postponement of live events for the well-being of everyone.

While the world thought that the halt of live tournaments and casinos were temporary, the Coronavirus spread like a forest fire. Recently, the WPT announced that its plan to televise the final table has been suspended by the pandemic issue, forcing them to postpone the first three due in the coming week.

WPT had three final tables set to play at HyperX Esports Arena at the Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas between 31 March to 2 April. Over the three day span the 2020 WPT Gardens Poker Championship, the WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open and the WPT L.A. Poker Classic Main Events were to be played with live streaming coverage being recorded for the television broadcast.

The CEO of WPT, Adam Pliska announced the postponement on the WPT website stating that, “Due to the evolving circumstances surrounding the current crisis, the WPT will postpone its televised final tables,” he further added, “With public health welfare a priority and in line with government and agency directives, we will tentatively look to hold these tables in May with our second set of televised final tables. Further, we will communicate any other schedule changes to ongoing tournaments and events on WPT.com.”

In the meantime, WPT joined hands with partypoker to host a 17-day tournament series. The first-ever WPT Online Series boasts a whopping $30 million in prize pool. The WPT Online Championship which has a buy-in of $3,200 assures $5 million! Pliska stated, “WPT and partypoker are proud to break new ground for both of our brands with the first WPT Online festival. Players from around the globe can look forward to the opportunity to play in World Poker Tour events from the comfort of their homes at all buy-in levels.”
