WPT Taiwan postponed; APT Philippines cancelled due to COVID-19


It’s a bruising year for the world with the ongoing spread of the COVID-19. It marks an unprecedented time in modern history that will require the best of humanity to overcome. The virus has taken a huge toll on our lives. Globally affecting live tournaments that were set to be hosted in the first-half of 2020 has been now postponed and cancelled prioritizing health and safety of the participants and the staffs. And that means a large number of poker enthusiasts who had buckled up for the year will now have to wait until the ongoing situation is resolved.

The next tough decision to make would be World Poker Tour (WPT), one of the oldest and prestigious poker series which was supposed to be hosting WPT Taiwan 2020 is once again scheduled for later this year. Originally slated to occur between 7 March to 6 April, but the festival was shifted to 14-24 May 2020. Now, if we look at the growing number of coronavirus cases, the Chinese Texas Hold’em Poker Association (CPT Club) WPT’s partner venue confirmed on the Facebook page that the series will take place on 11-21 December 2020.

WPT Taiwan was supposed to be 17 events festival with buy-in ranging from TWD 6,000 to TWD 66,000. The Main Event assured TWD 8 million in prize pool for an investment of TWD 33,000. Right now, Taiwan has reported a total of 348 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus, 50 of which have recovered.

APT Philippines 2020

Another news making headlines yesterday was the cancellation of Asian Poker Tour (APT) Philippines 2020. The internationally recognized brand announced on their website, “Because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, it is with regret that APT Philippines is cancelled. Watch out for new details soon to be announced of next APT Philippines at Resorts World Manila which starts September 10, 2020.”

APT has another series scheduled from 10-21 September 2020 at Resorts World, Manila and the details of which will be announced soon. Additionally, APT joined Natural8 to hist Asian Poker Tour 2020 Online Series on 29 April to 10 May 2020. This will feature the Main Event, Championships Event, PLO Championships and Short Deck Championships. Alongside the winner, the APT Player of the Series will also be awarded.
