WPT to hold first-ever WPT Main Tour in Australia!

One of the prestigious poker festivals around the world, the World Poker Tour (WPT) announced three new WPT stops in Australia at The Star Gold Coast. The WPT visited the continent in September and October 2019 offering 10 events. Now, the WPT is heading Down Under and to host its first-ever WPT Main Tour event.

WPT returns to Australia for the second time in Season XVIII and AUD $1,500 WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast takes place from 30 April to 4 May 2020. The second annual WPT Australia festival will commence on 24 September with AUD $1,100 WPTDeepStacks Australia followed by the major attraction, $5,400 WPT Australia Main Event scheduled on 2 October.

The WPT Australia Main Event marks the first-ever WPT Main Tour event in Australia and the second Asia-Pacific WPT Main Tour stop in Season XIX following the announcement of WPT Cambodia to be held in NagaWorld in July 2020.

The WPT Vice President of Global Tour Management, Angelica Hael said, “The World Poker Tour’s relationship with The Star Gold Coast continues to blossom and these three festivals will only add more reasons for our loyal players to visit this poker hotbed. It brings me great joy to see poker continue to thrive in my native country and bring the WPT Champions Cup to Australia in Season XIX.”

The first trip of the WPT Australia recorded 658 entries creating a whopping prize pool of $1.48 million and it was Hari Varma who took down the event earning AUD $274,247 along with earning points for the WPT Asia-Pacific Player of the Year race.

“The Star Gold Coast and the nation of Australia warmly welcomes back the WPT for WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast and the rapidly approaching WPT Australia festival,” said Jess Mellor, COO, The Star Gold Coast. “Last year’s event showed the poker world that The Star Gold Coast is a must-attend poker destination and we look forward to showcasing our property to more players from around the globe.”

However, the future of the WPT events is still uncertain due to the outbreak of deadly coronavirus epidemic causing major disruptions in the live tour and casinos being forced to shut down and postponement or cancellation of various live events.
