WSOP 2019: Yasheel Doddanavar in top 20 of Event #31

Once again, we’re happy to bring to you the news of a stellar run by one of our Indian players at the 2019 World Series of Poker (WSOP). This time it comes from Event #31: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed, where a total field of 754 entries registered and two Indians progressed by the end of Day 1.

These included one of India’s best players and PokerStars Team Pro Aditya Agarwal, who unfortunately busted due to two big pots where he ended up on the losing side on Day 2. 114 players were paid, and Agarwal narrowly missed out on being one of them. For those who don’t know, Agarwal posts regular updates on his Twitter handle and that’s how we knew about his progress today:

The other Indian in play was Yasheel Doddanavar, who bagged 103,000 chips at the end of the day while Agarwal had 90,500. However, Doddanavar had more favourable outcomes on Day 2, grinding and slowly chipping up throughout the day. Eventually, he ended Day 2 among the top 10 chip stacks.

One major pot that Doddanavar won was when he had Kings against his neighbour’s Aces. However, he was lucky to hit a King on the flop and improve to Full House with two nines opening on the turn and river. He bagged 185k+ chips here. Another major hand was against Dave Stefanski where he showed J-Trips against his opponent’s AK and added another 160k+ chips to his stack.

Several past bracelet winners were a part of the field on Day 2 including legends of the game like Daniel Negreanu and Chris Ferguson, who have 6 gold bracelets each to their names. WSOP 2018 bracelet winner Jeremy Wien also busted during the day, a player Gutshot had an exclusive chat with last year.

4-time bracelet winner and WSOP 2009 Main Event champ Joe Cada was also in the mix, busting 41st for $7,959. Having outlasted such big names in this event, Doddanavar’s achievement becomes even more special. 20 players have progressed from Day 2 and Doddanavar has a stack of 685,000 chips, which is 8/20 at the moment.

India’s chances of a third WSOP gold bracelet are extremely high as Doddanavar progresses to Day 3 among the top stacks. Currently, 2-time bracelet winner Upeshka de Silva has the lead with 1,965,000 chips and when players return tomorrow, they will all be guaranteed a prize of at least $14,423 (~INR 10 Lakh) each which goes out to the 20th place finisher.

The last 6-8 months have been brilliant for Yasheel Doddanavar in online and live poker. He began touring Asia at the start of this year and has made some marvellous runs including a 3rd place finish in a Short Deck Event at APPT Korea in April, an FT finish in the APPT Korea Highroller, a 15th place finish in the APT Philippines Main Event and much more.

Day 2 top 10 chip counts:

  1. Upeshka De Silva – 1,965,000
  2. Nicholas Howard – 1,700,000
  3. Thomas Cazayous – 1,690,000
  4. Wojtek Barzantny – 1,300,000
  5. Veerab Zakarian – 1,100,000
  6. Josh Weiss – 940,000
  7. Jan Bednar – 770,000
  8. Yasheel Doddanavar – 685,000
  9. Angel Guillen – 670,000
  10. Paul Pires Trigo – 600,000
