Tamil Nadu: In an incident that took place in Kanyakumari, it reported how a student named J Justin Raj turned to chain snatching to make money for his online gaming habit. The news report published in The Times of India states that the student wanted to play online rummy and to support this habit he took to chain snatching. This was not all, there were three such incidents reported, wherein the 21-year-old engineering student snatched chains to aid his online rummy games habit. Furthermore, the news reports state that the accused is from Eethavilai, Mekkamandapam district.
According to the news report, Raj was detained by the police during a vehicular check. The news reports further add that police made inquiries which revealed how the accused was playing online rummy for the last two years. Also, the engineering student is a son of a daily wager labourer. The family reportedly was in some financial troubles and were finding it very difficult to make ends meet. The news report by The Times of India quotes a police officer stating, “He made some small gains during the early stages of the game and this turned him into an addict. But later, he lost a few lakhs in online gambling. Post this, Raj started selling gold from his house along with some home appliances.
This created a tiff between the accused and his family members. The 21-year-old with the help of an accomplice then resorted to stealing chains from women.” As per the news report, the culprit has stolen chains from women from Karungal, Thiruvattar and Eraniel regions.
