TORF’s Sameer Barde Urges Government To Issue licenses To Online Rummy Operators

Sameer Barde, CEO of The Online Rummy Federation (TORF) urged the government that online rummy and gaming platforms in India should be issued licenses. He said that this should be done mainly to avoid defaulters and also ensure that the industry becomes more accountable.

Barde further added, “There is also a need to have a licensing body which will put down processes for companies to obtain license to run an online rummy platform which will weed out non-eligible players right at the beginning.” Barde’s remark comes during a time when the Karnataka High Court directed the state government to decide on a representation as the state seeks a ban on all forms of online betting. He further added that a state commission should be set-up to regulate the rummy industry.

TORF CEO also emphasized that there needs to be a gaming commission. He further added that the gaming commission should have representations from the law, industry, IT, Home, and I&B ministers along with civil society. Barde urged that there are several such models being followed across the globe but the one that suits perfectly to India must be devised.

The online rummy industry is estimated to be valued at an INR 4,000 Crore in value and is growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30%. Banning rummy platforms is not a solution, said Barde. He further added, “The rate of gambling is higher in states where online rummy is banned. This eventually leads to misleading and unaccountable platforms. “

To add to this, Shivanandan Pare, CEO, Gaussian Network also stated that there is a need for a regulatory authority. He mentioned “Rummy is considered to be India’s family card game and is played across the world by Indians. We believe that it is very important to have a regulatory body as it will ensure that there is clarity for stakeholders and players too. The regulation will also help the sector to prosper and attract investments and create immense economic value.”
