Quite a few games were pushed on to the next day due to rain interruptions at the 2018 Roland Garros and because of that, several matches were scheduled to finish yesterday, some still Round 1 games, while some being the originally scheduled Round 2 games. Thankfully, no more upsets were seen yesterday.
After Venus Williams shocking exited the tournament in Round 1, she progressed to Round 2 of the Women’s Doubles, beating the 14th seeded Japanese duo of Aoyama/Kato, with her doubles partner Serena. India’s Yuki Bhambri lost his Round 1 singles game as well, to Ruben Bemelmans, but won his Men’s Doubles Round 1 game with partner Divij Sharan.
Among the top seeds, Simona Halep survived a scare, losing the first set to Alison Riske but coming back strong to win the game. She has been ranked #1 in the world for quite some time now but has no grand slam title under her belt as yet. Could this be her first?
Women’s seed #2 Caroline Wozniacki will give her stiff competition for the title, winning her Round 2 game far more easily, beating Georgina García Pérez 6-1, 6-0. Most of the top seeded players in the men’s tournament went through with ease as well, except for #12 seed Sam Querrey who lost in 4 sets to Gilles Simon.
With no Roger Federer in the tournament, and a slip in performances from Novak Djokovic over the last year or so, 21-year old Alexander Zverev was seeded #2 for this competition and while he did win his Round 2 game against the unseeded Dusan Lajovic, he had to earn each point in that 5-set game. Djokovic too, progressed to the third round win a straight-sets win against Jaume Munar.
