How To Play Rummy

Rummy Game

Once the players have gathered, each player will be dealt 13 cards each and if you are lucky, you might as well get a few jokers. There are a total of four suits, each having – Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, and King.

The remaining cards have to be placed face down. This will be the closed deck. A random card from amongst this will be picked and made the wild joker.

The central theme

Time to put all your mental abilities and strategies to practice by forming sets and sequences with your rummy cards. In a race to be the winner, two sequences are a must; one of which is pure and others must be sets. As the game progresses, each player discards a card during their turn and this card could be picked up by the immediate player when his/her turn comes. If they don’t need it, they can pick a card from the closed deck and keep it or discard it depending on their strategy.

A set can be formed by three or four cards of the same rank but should be from different suits. A joker is always allowed to finish a set. A sequence on the other hand is made of cards belonging to the same suit but arranged in a consecutive order. A pure sequence is formed without a joker whereas an impure sequence can have a joker.

Examples:

Pure sequence: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ (three cards are used here without a joker or a wild card)

Impure sequence: 6♦ 7♦ Q♠ 9♦ (Here Q♠ represents the wild joker in place of 8♦)

 Sets:  

        8♦ 8♣ 8♠ 8♥

       A♥ A♣ A♦

       9♦ Q♠ 9♠ 9♥ (Q♠ represents the joker in place of 9♣)

One has to stay mindful and observant of the cards being discarded and picked to plan a good strategy. A player can choose to quit the game, but not without a penalty. Once you are sure you have two sequences and sets in hand, you can declare and be the winner!
